Life in Color festival: Hip-hop moguls on the rise in Miami

The Life in Color festival, which bills itself as “the world’s largest paint party,”has always offered a finely tuned ear for music that matters to its audience in multiple genres

The 11th edition of the event is no different, with a lineup that includes global EDM star Zedd, rapper 21 Savage and local up-and-comer Lil Pump. It takes place Sunday, Jan. 14, in Miami.

Zedd was part of the vanguard of DJ-producers finding their way onto the mainstream pop charts with the title track of his 2012 album “Clarity,” which also included the hit Hayley Williams collaboration “Stay the Night.” The German-Russian producer, who recently extended his residency at Hakkasan in Las Vegas through 2020, had his biggest hit in 2017, the Alessia Cara-voiced single “Stay,” which dominated summer radio and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Atlanta-based mixtape star 21 Savage broke out in the summer of 2017 with “Issa Album” and the single “Bank Account,” but also with his low-riding feature on Post Malone’s platinum-selling single “Rock Star.” Even Forbes magazine has taken notice, including 21 Savage among its list of Hip-Hop’s Future Moguls Class of 2018.

Also included on the Forbes list of moguls is 17-year-old Miami rapper Lil Pump, who took his Soundcloud fame (100 million streams) to the mainstream charts in 2017, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Gucci Gang.”

The rest of the lineup at Life in Color features Los Angeles singer-songwriter Blackbear; Montreal-based DJ-producer Snails, famous for his growling, bass-heavy “vomitstep” sound; and rising DJ star K?D.

A multistage street festival that includes art installations, aerialists, vendors and cannons shooting gallons of multicolored, water-based paint, Life in Color is open to those 16 and older.
